Best bakeries in the North East

Best bakeries in the North East

We love a bakery visit here at Depicted District, so we thought it would be a great idea to share some of our favourites from across the North East. Be warned, it is a Greggs free zone.

Pink Lane

Situated in, yes you guessed it, Pink Lane in Newcastle city centre is the original Pink Lane Bakery, there are also branches in Gosforth and Jesmond. Selling a selection of artisan baked goods including pastries, pies and the best carrot cake I have ever tasted, this is a must visit. If you are visiting in autumn make sure you try their pumpkin cake.

 FAB Bakery

Based in Fenham in the West End of Newcastle, FAB Bakery is an artisan bakery selling a selection of breads and pastries. On our recent visit we picked up a couple of Nutella Knots (very generously filled) and a Bakewell Tart, really impressed and will definitely be back. They have recently opened another branch located in Gosforth.

Proven Goods

You can find them in Hoults Yard on the edge of Ouseburn, it is well worth joining the queue to check out their range of doughnuts, from the classic 'Homer' and bostock, along with a new selection of flavours each month. On our latest visit we picked up a banoffee pecan pie and a chocolate brownie custard. Our go to place for doughnuts in the area and well worth the wait.

 Northern Rye

Deservedly crowned as one of the top 10 bakeries in the UK in 2024, this small batch bakery based in Ouseburn has been one of our go to bakeries for several years now. They specialise in hand crafted sourdough breads, pastries, sandwiches and coffee using the finest of ingredients. It is a regular occurrence to see a queue snaking out of their door on a weekend. We recently visited their new shop based in North Shields and enjoyed an indulgent peanut butter and caramel and chocolate bostock.

Grants Bakery

Situated 20 miles outside of Newcastle in the picturesque Northumberland town of Corbridge, is Grants Bakery. Selling a wide array of cakes, pastries and sandwiches, we chose a Northumberland Pasty, Banoffee Pie and a Chocolate Cruffin. Beautifully presented, this place really is a treat.

Pure Knead

If you are walking up Dean Street from the Quayside towards the city centre, you will find this gem of a bakery situated on the right hand side as you climb the hill. Selling a wide array of artisan baked goods, it was the cakes that stopped us in our tracks, after much deliberation the carrot cake just pipped the pumpkin spice cake. You can also find them in their original branch in Whitley Bay on Park View.

Brocksbushes

Just outside Corbridge you will find this farm/farm shop which has undergone an extensive renovation in recent years. It was really busy when we visited and pumpkin picking season was in full force. Their excellent farm shop has a wide section of goods and a fantastic bakery section is available, we picked up a Yorkshire Pasty, some Lancashire crisps, a slice of chocolate and carrot cake, chocolate choux bun, a chocolate flapjack and as an extra bonus a GF Bakewell Tart. All of which were stunning and it is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Geordie Bangers

A regular at the Quayside Market and various other events across the North East for a while now. They also have a store in the Grainger Market and a new site at Cobalt business park in North Tyneside. Try their Banger Buns and Banger Dogs and if you like your sausage rolls, make sure you give this place a visit, they really are the best I have ever tried. They even sell frozen ones for you to bake at home.
